• Full Snow Moon-FEB. 28 AT 11:38 a.m. - Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February's full Moon the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions
in their areas made hunting very difficult.
Astronomy :: Help Us Choose March's Full Moon Name :: Farmers' Almanac
We’re just about halfway through the yearlong Farmers’ Almanac Name that Moon Contest. Since the release of the 2010 Almanac in September, you have helped us to come up with the names of five full Moons, from October through February. The winning names, so far, are:
October’s Full Pumpkin Moon
November’s Full Thankful Moon
December’s Full Glad Tidings Moon
January’s Full New Beginnings Moon
February’s Full Sweetheart’s Moon
February is almost over and voting has begun to name March’s full Moon. The traditional full Moon name for March is the Full Worm Moon. That’s because, as the temperature begins to warm, and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. Other names for the March full Moon are Full Crow Moon, because the cawing of crows signals the end of winter, the Full Crust Moon, because the snow becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night, the Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, and the Lenten Moon. No matter what you call it, the March full Moon was traditionally considered to be the last full Moon of winter, though sometimes it actually falls after the spring equinox.
This month, we received hundreds of new name suggestions for March’s full Moon. Our four finalists are Full Spring Ahead Moon, Full Shamrock Moon, Full Winter's End Moon, and Full Leprechaun Moon. Be sure to visit our Name that Moon Contest page today to vote for your favorite!
